In a fraction, one number sits above the line and one sits below. The numerator is the one above. In 5/6, 5 is the numerator and 6 is the denominator. The numerator tells you how many parts you have; the denominator tells you how many equal parts the whole was cut into. So 5/6 means five of those sixths. The word lives almost entirely in the maths classroom. Outside fractions you will hardly need it. People do not call the top of a score or a date a numerator. Keep it for 3/4, 2/5, and the rest.
