A novice is someone who is new to a skill or activity and has not had much practice yet — the opposite of an expert. You might hear 'novice driver', 'novice cook', or 'novice at chess'. It is a polite, neutral word, not an insult — it just means 'still learning, not far along yet'. The word has an older, more specific meaning too: in a Catholic religious order, a novice is a person who has joined but not yet made final, permanent vows to become a monk or nun.
