    「notify」是英文裡正式的「通知」：把一件重要訊息正式告訴對方，常出現在學校、公司、比賽、系統訊息裡。常見句型是 notify somebody of something（通知某人某事）和 notify somebody that…（通知某人……）。跟 let someone know 比起來，notify 更正式；朋友之間約出門，英文多說 let you know，較少說 notify you。

`notify` is the on-the-record version of `tell`. Picture a letter with an office's name printed at the top, or a message that opens with `We are writing to inform you...` — someone whose job it is to pass the news along is handing it over in a form that leaves a trace, something you could point at later and say `you did tell me`. That is why you notify the police, the school, the bank, your landlord — and why you simply tell a friend.

notify 可以想成 tell 的「公務版本」。畫面像一封信頭印著單位名稱的信，或是一則以「茲通知台端」開頭的訊息——有人因為職務關係把消息交到你手上，而且是留得下紀錄的那種交法，日後可以指著它說「你們確實通知過我」。所以英文裡 notify the police / notify the school / notify the bank / notify your landlord 都很自然；跟朋友講一件事，就只會說 tell。
