A non-event is something that did happen — a party, a match, a product launch, a “big day” — but it felt like nothing. People expected noise, surprise, or importance, and then the thing was small, quiet, or dull, so afterwards you shrug. Sports writers and gossip columns love the word; it is a little informal and a little mean, in a tired way rather than a cruel way. Though actually the name tricks you: it is not “an event that never took place.” It took place. It just failed to be the event everyone had built up in their heads.
