A nit is the tiny egg of a louse - a very small insect that can live in human hair. Parents and school nurses check children's hair for nits when there is a lice outbreak at school. In British English, calling someone "a nit" (informal, a bit old-fashioned) is a gentle insult meaning they did something silly. This is also where "nitpick" comes from - to nitpick is to look for very small, mistakes, the way you would pick nits out of hair one by one.
