A newscast is the news as a show on television or radio — the block of time when someone tells you what has happened. Americans use this word more; in Britain people often just say “the news” or “the news programme”. It is an ordinary media word: not slang, not stiff. You may also meet it as a verb, to newscast, meaning to present that show, but the noun is the usual one. It is the programme, not the person sitting in the studio.
