    to say something too quietly and without making the words clear enough, so that other people cannot understand you.

    mumble 有兩層：聲音太小，而且字沒有說清楚——所以別人聽不懂。它跟 whisper（氣音很小聲，但字是清楚的）不一樣；whisper 是「故意小聲」，mumble 常常是不好意思、緊張或懶得開口，話就糊在嘴巴裡出不來。mumble 這個字的聲音可以想成就是那個含糊的低音，嘴巴幾乎沒張開，字還沒成形就跑出來了。可以及物（mumble an apology）也可以不及物（Stop mumbling!）。

A way of picturing it: the words never fully leave the mouth. The lips barely move, the sound stays low and soft in the throat, and the edges of each word blur into the next — so the listener hears that you said something, but cannot cut it apart into words.
