A mudslide is when a lot of wet earth on a suddenly breaks loose and pours down, like a river of mud. It happens after heavy rain, when the ground is too wet to hold together. It can bury roads, cars, and houses, so news reports treat it as a serious disaster. It is close to a landslide, but a mudslide is specifically wet, flowing earth, not just rocks or dry ground falling. Though actually, nature is messier than the two words: what comes down is often mud mixed with stones and trees.
