Think of Mrs as the small polite label you put in front of a married woman's family name — Mrs Lin, Mrs Watson — marking that you are speaking about her or to her with a bit of formal distance. Like Mr, it is such a plain frame that English can swap the surname out for a quality and instantly invent a character: Mrs Tidy, Mrs Nosy.
