A mortician is someone whose job is to look after the dead and to arrange the funeral: preparing the body, helping the family choose a coffin, and running the service. It is mainly an American word. In Britain people more often say undertaker, and funeral director is used in both places. It sounds a little like physician, and it does share that work-ending -ician, but a mortician is not a doctor. Families meet this person at a very hard time, so the work is both practical and careful with people’s feelings. In older American ads the word was meant to sound more professional than undertaker.
