Monumental describes something extremely large, important, or impressive — often a huge achievement, a huge effort, or even a huge mistake ("a monumental error"). It comes from the idea of something so big it deserves a monument, a large structure built to remember an important person or event. It can also be used more literally, to describe something actually related to a monument, but the "extremely great" meaning is far more common in everyday speech.
