Monolithic describes something that is one single, huge, solid block - like a mountain from one piece of rock. From there, people use it for anything big and uniform that feels impossible to change in small parts: a monolithic company, a monolithic government system, or in computer science, a monolithic program built as one giant piece instead of small separate parts. It often carries a slightly negative feeling - rigid, hard to update, not flexible.
