    Monastic describes anything relating to monks or nuns and the quiet, simple, disciplined life they live in a monastery, away from ordinary daily society, usually centered on religion and routine. The word is also used more loosely today to describe any very plain, strict, simple lifestyle, even outside of religion — like someone living in a nearly empty apartment with a strict daily schedule being described as "monastic."
