Momentary means lasting only a very short time — a blink, a flash, then gone. A momentary pause, a momentary look of surprise, a momentary loss of power. It is a calm, slightly written adjective: you will hear it in news and careful speech more than in playground talk. It does not mean “important.” Though actually, momentary and momentous both start from moment, and that is why they trick the eye. Here moment is the short stretch of time. A momentary decision would be a decision that lasted a second, not a decision that changed your life.
