A third mod, again only sharing the spelling. This one is a photograph from Britain in the 1960s: a pressed suit, short hair, a scooter polished until it shines. The name is short for modernist, because these young people thought of themselves as the up-to-date ones, and looking sharp was the whole statement.
Wiktionary's citation for this sense spells the name out: the Mods, or Moderns, wore sharply cut Italian-style suits and rode motor scooters. LDOCE describes the same group: young people in 1960s Britain in neat clothes, listening to soul music, riding scooters.
