A mitten is a warm covering for the hand that has a separate place only for the thumb. The other four fingers stay together in one shared pocket. That design keeps fingers warmer, but it makes small jobs — buttons, keys, a phone screen — harder. Children wear mittens in snow; some do too, until they need a better grip. A glove gives each finger its own tube; a mitten does not. Though actually, many people say gloves for both when they are not being careful. The word you will meet is the noun. A verb to mitten sits in old dictionaries, but students almost never need it.
