Mirthlessly is how you do something when there is no real amusement in it. If someone smiles mirthlessly, the smile is on the face only. If they speak mirthlessly, the words may look like a joke on paper, but the voice has no laugh in it — often because the person is tired, bitter, or done pretending. It is the adverb of mirthless, and it lives in the same slightly kind of English. You will meet it in stories more than in everyday talk.
