Picture school life as a row of boxes laid end to end. The first boxes are for small children, the last ones are for teenagers. Middle school is the box in the middle, and the word says nothing more than that: it is the part between the early years and the later ones. Because different countries draw the boxes in different places, the same name covers different ages, and the same name can mean either the building or the years you spend in it.

可以想成求學的日子是一排接在一起的盒子。最前面幾個是給小小孩的，最後面幾個是給青少年的。middle school 就是中間那一個盒子，這個詞本身只說了這件事：它是前段和後段之間的那一塊。因為每個國家把盒子切在不同的地方，同一個名字就對應到不同的年紀。也因為它既可以指那棟學校，也可以指你在裡面度過的那幾年，所以同一個詞會有兩種用法。
