You can picture middle as 'the point that sits equally far from both ends' — the centre of a line, with the same distance to the left edge and the right edge. From that one picture everything follows: the centre of a thing in space, the centre of a stretch of time, the centre of a scale (between best and worst), and even being right in the thick of something happening all around you.
