Picture two rivers running into each other: downstream there is one river, and you cannot point to where either one used to be. Merge is that joining. Sometimes what matters is the result (two companies become one); sometimes what matters is the losing of the boundary (a figure merging into the dark).

可以想成：兩條河匯在一起，往下游看只剩一條，而且你指不出原來哪一邊是哪一邊。merge 就是這個匯合。有時候重點在結果——兩家公司變成一家；有時候重點在界線消失——一個身影融進黑暗裡，看不出邊在哪。兩個用法差別只在你注意的是哪一半。
