You can picture mention as touching on something just in passing: you say its name or bring it up for a moment, lightly, without stopping to explain. A quick brush against a topic — enough that it's been said, not enough to be a full account. The noun is simply that brush turned into a thing; the are all small twists on 'I only touched on it.'
