Menthol is a white, crystal-like stuff that smells and tastes strongly of mint and makes the mouth and nose feel cold. It is not the mint plant itself. It is the cooling piece people take from mint, or make in a lab, and put into other things: sweets, chewing gum, , cough sweets, muscle rubs, and some cigarettes. In products it is a flavour and a feel, not a food you cook with. You meet the word on packets more than in everyday chat. It looks a little like methanol, which is a different and dangerous industrial alcohol — they are not the same thing.
