A mender is someone who repairs a thing that is broken or worn. You hear it most in older English and in job names: a road-mender, a shoe-mender, a fence-mender. In ordinary talk now we more often say who does the job (a tailor, a mechanic) or use repairer. The word is still clear: this is the person who puts the thing right, not the person who looks after a child, and not the person who makes something new.
