Mendacious means not truthful — the person, the claim, or the story is lying, or is built on lies. Though actually, it is not the everyday word. If a child says something , we say they lied, or they were not honest. Mendacious is a heavy, formal word, often used when someone wants to accuse: a mendacious claim, a mendacious witness. It says the is not a small slip; it feels done on purpose, and the speaker is judging it. You will see it in newspapers, law, and serious essays, not at the dinner table.
