The plural of 'medium' — the different ways used to send information or make art.

Think of a 'medium' as a channel that carries something from one place to another — the stuff in the middle that lets a message or an artwork get across. 'Media' is the plural of that idea: the many channels through which things travel. When those channels are the ones carrying news to everyone — TV, radio, newspapers, the internet — we call all of them together 'the media'.

From Latin medium 'middle, the thing in between', neuter of medius 'middle'; media is its Latin plural. The modern 'channels of communication' sense grows from the idea of something standing in the middle to carry a message across.
