Meaningless describes something that has no meaning, no purpose, or no importance. A sentence can be meaningless if the words don't make sense together. A rule can feel meaningless if nobody understands why it exists or nobody follows it. A gesture, like an apology, can be called meaningless if the person doesn't really mean it — the words are said, but no real feeling is behind them. People also say a job feels 'meaningless' when it seems pointless, like it doesn't matter to anyone.
