A matchmaker is a person who tries to pair two people, classically so they might marry. In many places this was a real job, and the word still carries that warm, slightly old picture — an aunt who says “you two should meet” is doing a little of the same work. Though actually the word stretches: games and apps now call the system that pairs players a matchmaker, and people use it for anyone who pairs things well. The match here is the pairing match, not fire — a matchmaker does not make matches you strike. When you mean marriage, the word feels traditional; in games it sounds fully modern.
