A mammal is an animal whose babies drink milk from the mother’s body. Hair or fur is common, and most mammals are warm inside even when the air is cold. People are mammals; so are dogs, cats, bats, and — though it still surprises students — whales and dolphins, which have no fur you can see but still nurse their young. The word is the ordinary school-science word for that whole group; it is not slang and not emotional. You can say “Humans are mammals” in a calm, factual way. It names the kind of animal, not “an animal that lives with a mother”.
