If you call a man, or his behaviour, macho, you mean he is doing the traditional “strong, brave, don’t-cry, don’t-ask-for-help” act. English borrowed Spanish macho, “male.” Though actually, English did not borrow the praise. We mostly use it with a smile or a — to tease someone for showing off, or to say we do not like the performance. “Don’t be so macho” might mean “put the coat on”; “macho nonsense” might mean a story that is all fights and no feeling. As a noun, a macho is a man who behaves that way. Informal. is the name for the whole culture of that behaviour.
