A lodestone is a piece of iron ore that is already a magnet. It pulls other iron, and a needle will line up with it. Sailors once used it to find north, so the name is lode, “a guide,” plus stone. Today we mostly say magnet. Lodestone sounds old or scientific, and it names the natural stone, not a fridge magnet from a shop. You will still meet it in the history of science, and beside lodestar — a star you steer by — which shares that old “guide” piece.
