To lip-read is to understand what someone is saying by watching the way their lips move, because you cannot hear them. Deaf and hard-of-hearing people often learn it; hearing people do a little of it when a room is noisy or a film has no sound. It is hard work. Many sounds look the same on the mouth, so you use the rest of the sentence and the situation to guess. You lip-read a person, or you lip-read what they are saying. The present and the past look the same: I lip-read, yesterday I lip-read — like read / read, not like walked.
