A latrine is a toilet outdoors, the kind you find in a camp, on a building site, or — most of all — in the army. It is not the bathroom in a house. It may be a simple hole, a trench, or a small hut over a pit, built because there are no . Soldiers, , and aid workers use the word; in ordinary city talk people just say toilet. It can sound rough or old-fashioned, and it often carries a smell of mud, heat, and sharing with many people. Though actually, armies still need the word because a camp has to put the toilet somewhere on purpose, away from food and water, or people get sick.
