A lath is a long, thin, flat strip of wood. Builders used to nail laths across a wall or ceiling and then spread plaster over them — the old indoor wall called lath and plaster, before the big smooth boards we use now. You meet the word in building, in old houses, and in craft history. One strip is a lath; many together are laths. It is a workshop word, not a daily one. On the page it sits close to , the spinning machine; they are not the same thing. A lath holds plaster. A turns wood or metal. If you only remember one picture, remember a skinny wooden rib on a wall.
