Landowning is usually a describing word, not a name for one person. The landowning class, landowning families: people who own (often a lot of) land. You can also use it as a thing-word for the activity: landowning made them rich. If you mean one person, landowner is the word you want. It feels a little formal, like something from the news or a history book.
