Picture something that looks wrong from the outside, and the reason that makes it acceptable being laid alongside it. Sometimes a person supplies that reason; sometimes the circumstances themselves are reason enough. A separate, technical use takes the same idea of 'lining things up' and applies it literally, to text on a page.
