Borrowed into English in India in the 17th century from a name of the Hindu deity Jagannath (Sanskrit jagannatha, lord of the universe). The English sense comes from the Rath Yatra chariot procession at Puri, where a huge wagon carrying the idol is pulled forward with ropes.
