A place where people are locked up after breaking the law, or while they wait for their trial.
監獄
A locked building where people who broke the law are shut away. The whole word turns on that one picture of being locked up; the verb is simply the action of putting someone into that place.
可以想成一棟上了鎖的建築物，犯法的人被關在裡面、出不來。整個字就圍著這個「被鎖起來」的畫面打轉；動詞不過是把人送進這個地方的那個動作。
