An islander is someone who lives on an island, or who comes from one. It is an ordinary word for a person, not for the land. You can say a Pacific islander, a Scottish islander, the islanders of Taiwan’s islands. Though actually, people on a very large island — Britain, for example — often do not call themselves islanders, because the place does not feel small or cut off; the word sits more naturally on people from smaller islands. That is habit, not a grammar rule. It is neutral in tone, neither grand nor rude by itself.
