If a person is inscrutable, their face does not help you at all. No smile you can trust, no , no flicker — so you cannot tell what they are feeling or thinking. People also call a look, a smile, or even a plan inscrutable when it will not give up its meaning. It is a slightly literary word, common in novels and news profiles, less common in everyday chat. Though actually, it does not mean the person is empty or cold inside; it only means nothing is showing. And it is not the same as quiet: a quiet person may still have a very readable face.
