From the word’s history

From Old French enheriter, from Late Latin inhereditare 'to make someone an heir', built on heres/hered- 'heir'. The word began as making someone the person who comes next in line, which is exactly the position all four modern senses describe.

從古法語 enheriter 來，源頭是後期拉丁文 inhereditare「立某人為繼承人」，字根 heres/hered- 就是「繼承人」（heredity、hereditary 同源）。所以這個字一開始講的就是「讓某人成為排在下一位的那個人」——而「排在下一位」正好就是現代四個意思共同的位置：東西之所以到你這裡，是因為你在那條線上的下一格。
