Inhalation is the noun for the act of breathing something in — air, medicine, smoke, or gas. After a fire, smoke inhalation means the person breathed in smoke, and that is often the real injury, not the burn. In a clinic, inhalation can also name a treatment: you sit and breathe in medicine as a mist. It is a slightly formal, medical-sounding word. At home people just say breathe in or inhale. You may also meet it on a label: “for inhalation only” means do not swallow it, breathe it. The opposite idea is , breathing out, though that word is even more textbook.
