Humiliating describes the thing that does the damage: a humiliating defeat, a humiliating question, a humiliating mistake. That situation makes you feel ashamed, , and often angry, because you have been made to look weak or stupid. People use it for public losses and put-downs. A joke can be funny to the room and still humiliating to the person it is about. It names the experience, not a kind of person.
