Hosiery is a shop-and-factory word for things you wear on your legs and feet: socks, , and . You see it on signs in clothing stores and in the clothing business. Ordinary people rarely say it in chat. A student would say socks or ; a shop might label the shelf hosiery. It does not mean a water hose, even though the old word hose () sits inside it. It is a little old-fashioned and quite formal — a label word more than a talking word.
