A helmsman is the person who steers a ship or boat — hands on the helm, which is the wheel or the . The helmsman is not always the captain. The captain decides where the ship should go; the helmsman keeps it on that path. It is a sea word, a little formal, still used on real boats and in stories. Though actually English stretches at the helm to mean “in charge” of a company, but helmsman itself usually stays with the boat.
