A heifer is a young female cow that has not yet given birth to a calf. Farmers need a separate word because a female cow's life changes after that first birth: until then she is a heifer; after that, people just call her a cow. It is an ordinary farm word, not fancy, but city students may never hear it. You will meet it in farming, in exams about animals, and in stories set on the land. Though actually, in some places people also use heifer as a rude name for a woman. That use is , and you should not copy it. On the farm, the word is calm and exact; about a person, it can sting.
