Picture something held at the top and left loose at the bottom, with nothing underneath it. That is the whole word: fixed above, free below. A basket on a hook, a cloth flat against a wall, a vine dropping down a wall — each one is the same arrangement seen in a different place. The heaviest use of the word puts a person in that position as a punishment, which is why it is a grave word and not a light one.
