A halfpenny was a tiny British coin, worth half of one penny. People used it for a very long time; Britain stopped making it in the 1980s, so it is history now, not pocket money. Though actually, older speakers often do not say it as two clear bits (“half” + “penny”). They squeeze it into something like “haypenny”. In stories it can stand for something almost worthless: “I haven't a halfpenny” means you have no money at all. You may also see the old spelling ha'penny, with letters swallowed.

組成From Middle English halpeni, halfpeni, and then from half + penny (old English penning, a coin). Half is “one of two equal parts”; penny is the British coin. So the name is simply “half a penny”. (The same word later became a nickname for a tenant.)
