If a film, book, or match is gripping, it holds you. You do not look at the clock. The picture comes from grip: something that grips you holds you tightly, and here it holds your mind. It is a compliment. People say it of thrillers, true stories, and games that stay tense; they do not usually say it of a quiet poem unless they really could not leave it. It is not a formal word, but it is not slang either. Compare (stomach pain, or complaining), which looks similar and is not this word.
