If someone is grief-stricken, they feel very sad because of something that has happened — almost always a death, or a loss that feels like one. The sadness has hit them hard. It is a strong, rather written word; in speech people also say . You can be grief-stricken and still go to work: the word names the feeling, not whether you can function. It is not a medical term, and it is not for a bad day or a failed test. Though actually, newspapers love it, so students meet it in headlines more than in chat.
