People say gosh when they are surprised, or when they want a soft little cry instead of a real swear. “Oh gosh.” “Gosh, I didn’t know.” It is a form of God — a way to speak without using the holy name. It was first written as by gosh in 1757, probably from an older by gosse. Today it can sound a bit old-fashioned, or a bit , or gently funny. Older people may mean it quite sincerely; younger people often use it lightly. It is informal. You would not put it in a serious essay. It does not name a person.
